SPORTS IMPORTS AND IMPROVEMENTS

Monte Vista Spring sports are now in season. The new teams include Lacrosse and Badminton and there are much needed improvements happening with the swim team. MVCS student athletes are excited about upcoming improvements along with new editions to Monte Vista sports.

One of the newest sport this year is lacrosse. The sport was introduced this year and has already become news to lacrosse players of any grade at MVCS.

Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. In this sport, players use the head of the lacrosse stick to carry, pass, catch, and shoot the ball into the goal. For those interested in the sport please contact Coach Matt Coleman for more details.

Bringing a new sport to the school “is not easy,” says Coleman, the new coach of the sport. MVCS is being very progressive by bringing sports that are not extremely popular to the school. The practices would be from two to two and a half hours from Monday through Thursday. He would be teaching girls the game, the rules, the etiquette, and the history of lacrosse.

Coach Coleman said that it would be about “Fundamentals. Fundamentals. Fundamentals.” He also shared with MVC Press, “I would like to see girls and boys lacrosse.” Tryouts for this sport were January 28th to January 30th. In the next 3-5 years Mr. Coleman wants students to come to the school specifically to be apart of the lacrosse team.

Badminton also will be introduced as a new sport this year. Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. This is yet another sport that is not very popular like football, soccer, baseball, etc. that MVC may bring to next year. Coach Kirchner is the person to contact for more information about the sport.

For the swim organization there look to be many improvements under the watch of Coleman, the athletic director. The swimming team is looking forward to the acquisition of brand new starting blocks for this season.

“It’s really exciting because it’s not just a safety issue, it’s a performance issue...I’m excited to have our swimmers be able to practice at their very highest peak,” says Mrs. Siemsen MVCS’s swimming coach.

For students, the co-ed swimming tryouts took place from Wednesday, January 28-30. Coach Siemsen is excited for the upcoming swimmers, and looks for them to fill in for the loss of this year's graduating seniors. One of Coach Siemsen’s goals is that the boys will win season this year saying,

“I think they have the ability to, and then I have several swimmers I’d like to see go to CCS that were a tenth of a second off last year.” The swimming team this year is improving their pool equipment along with their players. Coach Siemsen’s second season as swimming coach is looking bright, and Monte Vista is excited to cheer them on.

Monte Vista athletic programs are increasing both importance and funds. The school is definitely a college prep school, but academics are not the school’s only concern. This is all possible from MVCS setting aside extra funds for only athletics.
