IT'S SWELL TO BUILD A WELL

In December, a new well was dug by Maggiora Brothers Drilling to have a secondary source of water supporting Monte Vista in case the primary well fails. By February technicians will connect the well to the computer system on campus and make it operational.

To learn more about the well, sources from the Vista spoke to the school’s Headmaster Dr. Salerno; he told the Vista that the drilling of the well has been completed. The pump is set to bring the water up to the water tower located by the JV softball field. The tower becomes filled with water from the wells and then brings the water down to campus. Technicians still have to connect the new well to the water system. The water system is connected to the original well on campus. The new 500-foot-deep well will alternate with the primary well filling up the water tank to bring water down to campus. Monte Vista relies on well water for all fresh water systems on campus. Previously, the school had one well.

The administration wanted to ensure that if the original well had a problem the school would have plenty of water. If Monte Vista only has one well, problems can affect the water circulation of the whole campus. Administration has planned for future water issues by constructing the second well. With the second well the school will have a backup water source if anything were to happen to the primary well. Complications with a singular well would also be a problem for the resident students who need water to keep their homes running.

In addition to the primary and new well, there is also a historic brick well on campus. It was a part of the original campus and exists on the lawn to the right of the cafeteria. There have been many wells that used to be on campus throughout the years.
