New students adjust to dorm life at MVCS

Freshman speak of their experience of adjusting to life in the Girl’s and Boy’s Dormitory at Monte Vista and problems that have recently arisen. This past month, three dorm students shared their experiences about campus living. They claim that resident life is great, although they revealed some problems within the dorms.

The majority of dorm residences are international students from China or other Asian countries. Joshua Yao, Kelly Hu, and Helen Chen are international students that explained how living on campus is enjoyable. “I talked to one of my advisors because I’ve had some problems with English. I cannot understand clearly, she said if I need help to ask her.” Chu said.

The staff prove to be one of the key factors that makes campus living pleasant. “I really like staff they are very kind and nice” Joshua Yao explained.

Darron Bartholomew, assistant director of the boys dorm says, “It is our desire that the students feel at home in our residence halls. A place where they can be themselves, but at the same time, be encouraged, challenged, and know that they are here for a bigger purpose. We want them to know that the Res Life Staff love them and care about them.” Mr. Bartholomew also discussed daily life in the residence halls from a facility perspective. “The students live here; ninety one students call this their home for the school year. Our facilities serve the students well, but the buildings receive a lot of normal everyday use and require quite a bit of upkeep. Our residence halls have been the home to so many students over the years. Yes, we are always looking for opportunities to make things better .” Mr. Bartholomew expressed how the Res Life Staff cares very deeply about the students. “We are more than just advisors to the students, we are family."

However, each student mentioned different problems that are present in the dorms. Kelly brought up problems regarding insulation in the girls dorm. Alongside this claim, Yao mentioned AC trouble in the boys dormitory. Helen addressed some other downsides including how dorm students are to take part in church every weekend. Helen respects her school and religion but thinks that campus residents should have a choice to take part in church.“I think the school has forced us to go to church every weekend. I don’t really like it.”

Resident students cherish their home at MVCS, and are willing to fix these problems.
