Theater Arts Spreads the Godspell

Studio MVC opens the musical Godspell on November first. The musical is also being performed the third and the eighth through the tenth, Monte Vista opens the musical Godspell for all the parents, faculty and friends to see.

Godspell is the creative interpretation of the gospel of Matthew and shows the relationship between the characters and Jesus in a way that one has never seen before. “Godspell is my favorite musical of all musicals. It is a beautiful and relatable experience for the audience,” says Mrs. Hoy, a theater arts teacher at MVCS.

Godspell was created by Stephen Schwartz who designed the musical in such a way that one can set it in any time or place. The play’s evolving timeline makes it perfect to present at a Christian high school. With social media and the ever-evolving world of technology, setting a play in the present time creates a plot that students can connect with and come to understand.

Dawn Hoy the Director of the musical says, “The student body learns about the gospel of Matthew as we go through the show. It is an excellent piece. It is entertaining, and there are some genuinely moving parts to it.

“The musical can be set to be in the distant future, in the present time, or even in the seventies," says Mrs. Hoy.

The students are all excited about the play and have positive things to say about the production. Paul Venable, playing the role of Telly, told the Vista, “I love the ending of the play. It is very visually and musically powerful.” The production will be a profound and amazing experience for the cast and audience.

Paul also said, “In a perfect world where MVCS could form a community like the one in Godspell, I would bet a lot of the problems we go through on a day to day basis would poof from existence.”
